A new type of traffic camera is now on Victoria’s roads, but the government will not provide detail on what it does, or even what it looks like.
During the trial, the mobile road safety trailer camera being tested will not be issuing any fines to motorists.
Drive contacted the Department of Justice and Community Safety Victoria (DJCS), who are running the trial, with a series of questions.
However a DJCS spokesperson declined to comment on what the camera is designed to detect, or what the new camera looks like.
The spokesperson also declined to answer what is different about the trialled camera compared to any existing cameras.
The DJCS did clarify that the technology does not rely on artificial intelligence for enforcement purposes.
A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokesperson said: “Victoria’s road safety camera program plays a critical role in changing driver behaviour, reducing serious injuries and saving lives.”
“That’s why we’re continuing to explore new locations and trial new equipment across the road network, to prevent crashes and deaths on our roads.”
“Every dollar received from road safety cameras goes to the Better Roads Victoria Trust, where it is spent on road restoration, road surface replacement, bridge strengthening and other road safety infrastructure improvements.”
According to the DJCS, the purpose of the trial is to gather data and ensure the technology is accurate, safe and operationally effective.
The DJCS says only after the trial will the technology be considered for use in the existing mobile camera program and deployed for enforcement purposes.
