A diesel-engined variant has returned to the Mercedes-Benz G-Class four-wheel-drive range for 2026, three years after its predecessor was culled due to slow sales.

The new G450d joins the AMG G63 and electric G580 with EQ Technology in the facelifted G-Class line-up, powered by an uprated version of the G400d's 3.0-litre turbo-diesel inline six-cylinder.

Prices start from $214,900 plus on-road costs, which is $31,600 more affordable than when the last diesel-powered G-Class was available in 2022, but power and torque have risen 27kW and 50Nm respectively.

The 2026 G450d now outputs 270kW/750Nm thanks to a 48-volt mild-hybrid boost, allowing a 0.6-second reduction of the claimed zero to 100km/h acceleration time to 5.8sec.

Underpinning the G450d is the same ladder-frame chassis and rigid rear axle as the rest of the G-Class range, as well as three mechanical differential locks and low-range gearing for enhanced off-road ability.

Featuring 241mm of ground clearance, a 700mm wading depth, and 31- and 30-degree approach and departure angles, the G450d promises to keep up with the likes of the Ford Ranger, Toyota LandCruiser, and Ineos Grenadier in tough terrain.

However, as a Mercedes, the diesel G-Class also provides a premium level of interior amenities, including walnut wood trim, Burmester sound system, and sunroof.

The brand’s MBUX operating system is also fitted to the G450d, which features dual 12.3-inch screens for the infotainment and digital instrument cluster, as well as a head-up display with augmented reality functionality.

Standing the diesel model apart is the standard fitment of the Professional Line Exterior package, which includes mudflaps and a silver-finished front skid plate.

Also standard are 18-inch black alloy wheels with summer tyres, but buyers can opt for all-terrain rubber at no cost.

As with the other G-Class variants, a number of option packages are available to tweak exterior styling and interior fit-out, which are all detailed below.
