Chinese marque XPeng will begin rolling out its brand of electric car chargers later this year in Australia, as well as other parts of the world, in a bid for greater market visibility.

Exact locations and the number of chargers is still unknown, but according to slides presented to media at the XPeng Global Brand Night, the brand’s ultra-fast chargers will output 480kW and feature six outlets per station.

This compares with Tesla’s Superchargers that are rated up to 250kW and can add nearly 300km of driving range in as little as 15 minutes.

There are now also about 100 Tesla Superchargers in Australia, littered throughout the country and connecting high-traffic pathways like the east coast.

XPeng currently only fields one car in Australia, the G6 mid-size SUV, that can charge at speeds of up to 280kW, making it faster than even a Porsche Taycan (270kW).

As such, the G6 can, according to XPeng, recoup 10-80 per cent of its battery capacity in less than 20 minutes.

According to the Electric Vehicle Council’s charging map there are only two charging station locations in Australia that can output 200kW or more, amounting to five outlets.

The XPeng G6 will be joined by the larger G9 SUV and X9 people mover later this year, followed by the P7+ sedan in 2026.
