Teeing up against the BYD Atto 2, Hyundai Inster, Jeep Avenger, and other city SUVs, the ID. Cross EV is the next piece in VW's small electric-car puzzle.
Volkswagen has unveiled the ID. Cross, a new electric concept car quoting up to 420km of driving range, which is intended to compete in the popular city SUV market against European and Chinese rivals.
The ID. Cross is the fourth member of the Volkswagen Group's new small electric-car family, closely related to the ID. Polo city hatch, and due to go on sale in 2026 with a new electric drive system outputting 155kW.
The ID. Cross is a small SUV similar in size to the petrol-powered T-Cross, with the concept car measuring 4161mm long, 1839mm wide, 1588mm tall, and 2601mm in wheelbase.
Volkswagen describes its new SUV as having an "unusual width", intended to provide the occupants with a greater sense of space.
That interior space features an 11-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13-inch infotainment display. The seats, at least in the concept car, can also be fully reclined.
The steering wheel features a wide array of buttons, allowing the driver to activate features such as voice commands.
Storage options in the ID. Cross concept include a boot with a 450-litre volume claim, plus an additional 25-litre area under the front bonnet.
The ID. Cross is underpinned by a front-wheel-drive version of Volkswagen’s MEB Plus architecture, which will purportedly bring improvement to “engines, batteries, and software”.
