Toyota has confirmed an update for the GR Yaris hot hatch is weeks away from Australian showrooms with a series of mechanical changes said to have been developed through motorsport.

Prices are unchanged from the current GR Yaris, which is currently listed at $54,990 to $62,990 plus on-road costs.

Previewed in Japan earlier this year, all Toyota GR Yaris variants gain a new steering wheel with a smaller-diameter rim – 360mm, down from 365mm – plus a redesigned hand grip, and racing-inspired illuminated switches.

The new steering wheel deletes the central Toyota badge, but the updated GR Yaris is expected to remain on sale as a Toyota model – unlike Japan, where Gazoo Racing (GR) has been spun off into its own brand.

Few Toyota badges remain on the vehicle, other than the logo on the front bumper, and the wheel centre caps.

The electric power steering has been retuned with an "expanded operating range", while the GTS gains "race-bred" Bridgestone Potenza Race tyres to replace Michelin Pilot Sport 4S rubber.

Toyota's latest hot-hatch update comes less than 18 months after the arrival of a facelifted GR Yaris, adding more power, a new interior, lower driving position, retuned suspension, and the option of an automatic transmission.

Six months ago, the line-up was expanded with an optional Aero Performance Package for the flagship GTS.
