Tesla has announced it will reveal a new offering for Australia and New Zealand this Friday, which it has hinted will mark a significant step for the brand in the region.

But the advisory issued by Tesla to Australian and New Zealand media gives no details on what it will show, nor if it is a new product, technology or something else entirely.

The covers will come off this Friday, August 29, Tesla has advised.

Last week, the US car giant revealed the Model Y L, a long-wheelbase, six-seat version of its top seller, but it is initially only for China, and is not formally locked in for export markets.

It has also indicated a desire to sell the Cybertruck pick-up in Australia, though comments by executives hint it may still be a while away.

Another candidate is news on 'Full Self-Driving Supervised', the company's most advanced semi-autonomous technology, capable of hands-free – but not eyes-off – driving in a range of environments, as long as the human behind the wheel keeps their attention on the road.

Tesla has ramped up local testing of the technology in recent months, showing it operating in Sydney and Melbourne, as well as on the road in the UK and Japan, two other right-hand-drive markets, but it is yet to confirm when it will be rolled out to the public.

"We have been working with local authorities across AU & NZ and there are no regulatory blockers for release," Tesla Australia country director Thom Drew said in a LinkedIn post last month, "we are running through the final stages of validation prior to public release."

Tesla sales in Australia are down 41 per cent so far this year, though it has seen growth in recent months with the arrival of the updated Model Y SUV.
