The covers have been pulled off the next-generation 2027 Nissan X-Trail hybrid family SUV during a global market strategy conference at the brand's Yokohama, Japan headquarters today.

It debuted alongside the all-new 2027 Nissan Juke EV – not expected to reach Australia following the recent discontinuation of the petrol Juke – and confirmation the Nissan Skyline sedan and Xterra off-road SUV will return later this decade.

Positioned as the backbone of its global Core product category, the new X-Trail – also sold as the Rogue in the United States – will utilise the latest version of Nissan’s e-Power petrol-electric hybrid technology, which recently debuted in Australia in the Qashqai small SUV.

More details on the new model, including Australian launch timing, are expected to be confirmed at a formal unveiling in the coming months, with US sales likely to commence later this year as a 2027 model.

Nissan CEO and President Ivan Espinosa claimed the X-Trail's e-Power hybrid electric vehicle system creates a natural bridge for customers moving toward fully electric vehicles, maintaining the long-range confidence and capability required in the global SUV segment.

"[Our] product competitiveness will be reinforced through the next-generation Rogue Hybrid e-Power," Espinosa said at the media conference.

"Nissan’s breakthrough e‑Power series hybrid technology is extending electrification adoption, providing a core platform that delivers electric‑like driving and creating a natural bridge to fully electric vehicles.

"The new X-Trail and Rogue Hybrid e-Power [are] global core models featuring Nissan’s unique electric-motor-driven system that provides the efficiency of a strong hybrid with the spirited driving character provided by electric motors – all without needing to charge.

"The US will provide stable returns and a foundation for sustained growth, with an ambition to return to one million annual sales by fiscal 2030."

The strategy arrives at a critical juncture for the carmaker.

Following a massive restructure in 2024 to stay afloat, Nissan continues to battle a global sales decline.

Recent figures show global sales for February 2026 totaled 245,601 vehicles, a 7.4 per cent decrease compared to February 2025.

The new vehicle confirmations form part of Nissan's new "Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life" vision, a strategic direction intended to provide the company with much-needed scale and stability.

As part of this lean new approach, Nissan is scaling its global range down from 56 to 45 models and focusing development on three distinct product export areas, the US, Japan and China, expected to account for 80 per cent of its total sales volume.

The X-Trail also serves as a lead vehicle for the deployment of Nissan's 'AI Drive' technology.

This artificial intelligence integration is designed to enhance vehicle control and safety systems to make everyday driving more intuitive and accessible.

To reverse this trend, Nissan showcased three other pivotal models representing its new direction: the return of the Skyline performance flagship, the US-market Xterra SUV, and the Europe-focused Juke EV.

The company also plans to run a broader range of electrified powertrains in parallel through its alliance with Dongfeng.

This includes the N7 sedan and Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid ute, which were singled out as key exports for Asia-Pacific markets as part of the next phase for the company’s global recovery.
