RWD and AWD electric hatch gets interior upgrade, lives on alongside cheaper MG 4 Urban

An updated 2026 MG 4 rear- and all-wheel-drive electric hatchback has arrived in Australia, days after the brand launched the more-affordable, front-wheel-drive MG 4 Urban.

Priced from $39,990 drive-away – compared with $31,990 for the MG 4 Urban – the MG 4 is now limited to the Essence 64 RWD and XPower AWD, with the Excite 51, Excite 64 and Long Range 77 axed.

The streamlined line-up sees the cheapest recommended drive-away price rise from $37,990 for the outgoing MG 4 Excite 51 – but it is $5000 less than the list price of the outgoing Essence 64.

New for 2026 is a revised interior design similar to the related MG S5 and MG S6 electric SUVs, along with the unrelated MG 4 Urban, with a larger infotainment touchscreen running new software, physical air-conditioning and media controls, and a bigger digital instrument cluster.

The new infotainment software introduces built-in applications, such as Spotify, YouTube, TikTok and Amazon Music, and enables wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone connections.

MG says it has also improved material quality, while other changes include new door cards, and a revised centre console layout with a relocated wireless smartphone charger, rotary gear selector and cup holders.

A custom MG Pilot safety settings button has also been added, allowing drivers to "set your preferred safety settings and recall them easily with each drive".

The driving range of the MG 4 Essence 64 has increased from 435 kilometres to 452 kilometres, based on the WLTP lab-test standard, with new lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry and smaller 18-inch alloy wheels.

Its rear electric motor now outputs 140kW and 350Nm, down from 150kW but up from 250Nm.

Exterior design changes are limited to a "new aerodynamic rear spoiler" for the Essence 64 – plus the smaller wheels – while there are three new colour options: Iris Cyan, Sterling Silver and Piccadilly Blue.

The MG 4 XPower, which adds a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system for a combined 300kW, now costs $47,990 drive-away – down $8000 from a recommended $55,990 for the 2025 model, excluding run-out offers.

The more-affordable MG 4 Urban – which sits on separate front-wheel-drive underpinnings – is offered in Australia with 43kWh or 54kWh battery packs, offering claimed WLTP driving ranges of 323km and 415km, respectively.

The 2026 MG 4 EV is on sale now in Australia, joining the 2026 MG 4 Urban, with both vehicles on display at the Melbourne motor show this weekend.
