Once priced to compete with Lexus and entry-level BMW SUVs, the Mazda CX-60 range now starts below $45,000 before on-road costs with fewer features and less power.
The Mazda CX-60 mid-size SUV range will drop to a new price low when a new, entry-level 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine – $6000 cheaper than the six-cylinder above it – arrives in showrooms next month.
Mazda Australia says it expects one-third of CX-60 customers to choose the new 138kW/250Nm rear-wheel-drive, non-turbo, non-hybrid 'G25' grades, priced from $44,240 plus on-road costs in base Pure form.
It compares to $50,240 for the 'G40e' 3.3-litre turbo-petrol six-cylinder mild-hybrid, $52,240 for the 'D50e' 3.3-litre turbo-diesel six-cylinder mild-hybrid, and $63,290 for the 'P50e' 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol plug-in hybrid, all in Pure trim before on-road costs.
Buyers can also opt for better-equipped versions in the G25 Evolve, priced from $49,240 plus on-roads, and G25 Touring, priced from $52,240 plus on-roads.
For a limited time, the entry-level CX-60 G25 Pure is being offered for $47,990 drive-away in all states and territories bar Western Australia, where it is $48,990 drive-away – $6000 cheaper than equivalent deals on the G40e Pure.
About $44,000 before on-road costs would buy a CX-5 with the same 2.5-litre engine in better-equipped Touring trim ($45,100 with all-wheel drive), while the CX-60 G25 Touring is aligned on price with a flagship non-turbo CX-5 G25 Akera ($52,650).
Power comes from a familiar 2.5-litre non-turbo petrol four-cylinder used in a range of Mazda models, developing 138kW and 250Nm, and matched with an eight-speed multi-clutch automatic transmission.
The base engine is offered solely with rear-wheel drive, whereas all other options are all-wheel drive as standard.
It makes the entry-level CX-60 the first rear-wheel-drive, petrol-powered Mazda sold in Australia with four forward-opening doors since the 2006 Bravo ute – or, if dual-cabs are excluded, the MPV people mover of 1999 and 929 sedan of 1997.
The 2.5-litre unit is detuned slightly from its use in the CX-60 P50e plug-in hybrid, where it develops 141kW/261Nm before electric assistance is included, as well as the current CX-5 (140kW/252Nm).
However, it has more power and torque than the new-generation CX-5's 2.5-litre engine (132kW/242Nm), which will be detuned due to Euro 6d emissions rules that come into force for vehicles introduced from December 2025, after the CX-60 G25 reaches showrooms.
Still, with an unladen mass of 1670kg, the base CX-60 has one of the lowest power-to-weight ratios in the petrol-powered Mazda range, and overseas tests show it is capable of 0-100km/h in about 10 seconds.
There are no differences in equipment between the new four-cylinder CX-60 and its six-cylinder range-mates in equivalent model grades, detailed here.
The addition of the base engine means the price of the cheapest CX-60 has tumbled by $16,560 in four months, following the arrival of cheaper model grades, and slower-than-forecast sales.
The Mazda CX-60 G25 is available to order now, ahead of customer deliveries commencing next month, September 2025.
