Cheaper variant returns two years after model range slashed

An entry-level GLC200 version of the 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC mid-size luxury SUV has returned to the line-up two years after the latest-generation range slimmed the line-up to a single, $100,000-plus model grade.

It means the price of entry into the GLC line-up has dropped by $15,900 in two years – amid sales down 18 per cent last year – and has closed the gap to the cheapest BMW X3's RRP to about $3000.

On sale today, Mercedes-Benz's new GLC200 packs a less powerful engine, and a trimmed equipment list – with the Avantgarde Line styling pack – is priced from $89,000 plus on-road costs.

The new GLC200 is about $8000 dearer than the final shipments of the previous-generation GLC200 in 2022, but the new model is all-wheel drive, and significantly better equipped.

Until April 30, 2025, examples ordered with non-metallic or standard metallic paint – and no other options – will be available for $95,500 drive-away.

Powering the GLC200 is a 150kW/320Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine – down from 190kW/400Nm in the GLC300 – matched with the same nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

It is augmented by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, which can turn off the engine at speed to let the car coast and save fuel, while providing a boost of up to 17kW/205Nm under hard acceleration.

Mercedes-Benz claims fuel consumption of 7.5 litres per 100 kilometres, and a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 7.8 seconds – compared to 7.7L/100km and 6.2sec for the GLC300.

Compared to the GLC300 AMG Line, standard equipment differences focus on the Avantgarde Line package, which includes different front and rear bumpers, fewer body-coloured highlights, and additional chrome trim.

It also features 19-inch alloys in place of AMG-branded 20s, and unique silver grey diamond-patterned dashboard trim.

Shared features include adaptive LED headlights, an 11.9-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, synthetic leather-look seat trim, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, and a suite of safety features.

Option packs add features such as Burmester audio, Digital Light headlights, augmented-reality satellite navigation, lane centring assist, and more advanced autonomous emergency braking technology.
