Mercedes-AMG's first electric car – a Porsche Taycan-rivalling successor to the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe – has moved closer to reality with a new concept.

The Mercedes-AMG Concept GT XX is a close preview of the electric GT 4-Door Coupe successor due to launch in 2026, and draws on the 2023 Vision One-Eleven concept – itself inspired by the Mercedes C111 concept series from the 1960s and 1970s.

With three electric motors, the GT XX concept delivers "more than 1000kW" of combined power, with a top speed of "more than" 360km/h and the ability to charge on an 850kW DC fast-charger to gain 400 kilometres of driving range in five minutes.

And it debuts a new synthesised driving sound system intended to mimic the brand's iconic V8 models, through eight speakers – including some in the headlights.

The concept uses 'axial flux' electric motors – one at the front and two at the rear – developed by wholly-owned Mercedes-Benz subsidiary Yasa, which are said to be smaller, lighter and more powerful than 'radial flux' motors used in most electric vehicles.

Mercedes-AMG claims each motor would "almost fit inside a pizza box" and use rectangular instead of round coils, something the brand compares to Italians swapping spaghetti for tagliatelle in Ragù because its "flatter, broader surface carries more of the sauce".

The electric motor is planned for the series production version of the concept, Mercedes-AMG said.

Its high-performance battery supports 850kW DC fast-charging, with Mercedes-Benz claiming it "worked closely" with Italian-based EV charger manufacturer Alpitronic on a prototype charger capable of delivering 850kW via a standard CCS connector.

Most direct-current (DC) fast-chargers open to the public currently top out at 350kW in Australia.

Measuring 5204mm long, 2130mm wide including mirrors, and 1317mm tall, the AMG Concept GT XX is 156mm longer, 61mm wider and 136mm lower than the current AMG GT 4-Door Coupe.

It has a coefficient of drag of 0.198, which Mercedes-AMG says can only be beaten by "very few things in nature", such as a "peregrine falcon in full dive mode or a dolphin at full speed".

Sections of the orange concept car's body use electroluminescent paint technology for a "cool visual effect at night" and to signal "when the car is slowing to a standstill, when it's ready to charge and how far charging has progressed", the brand said.

A rear "MBUX Fluid Light Panel" offers more than 700 individual LEDs for a 3D-pixel effect with text and animation, which can display content such as a digital AMG logo or the current state of charge.

External speakers built into the headlights to warn pedestrians at low speeds and emit a driving sound, which Mercedes-AMG claims saves space and reduces weight compared to having separate speakers.

"Passive membrane" technology is used to generate air pressure in the external speakers for bass and frequency without any electrical input.

In the cabin, Mercedes-AMG has used biotech materials said to offer the "same look and feel as genuine leather" but are twice as strong and do not heat up as quickly on a hot summer day.

The material is built using different recycled materials, including an AMG GT3 racing tyre.

Meanwhile, its orange door handles are made from a 'Labfiber' biotech silk alternative designed to replicate a spider's silk, which is manufactured by "harvesting silk proteins from genetically modified bacteria with silk-producing superpowers".

Mercedes-AMG has also confirmed it is developing its first standalone SUV, which will be fully electric and used on its AMG.EA architecture, like the incoming AMG GT 4-Door Coupe successor.
