Hybrids and electric cars won’t boost falling Skoda sales in the short term, brand says

Despite broadening out its line-up to include petrol, mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully-electric cars, Skoda believes turning around falling sales will be a slow burn.

Skoda is not expecting the arrival of electric and hybrid powertrains in its line-up to instantly improve falling sales in Australia.

Last year, Skoda sold 5015 vehicles locally compared to 7999 in 2023, a drop of 37 per cent.

As of September 2025, Skoda has two electric models – the Elroq small-medium SUV and the Enyaq medium-large SUV and Coupe – in its line-up.

According to a spokesperson for the brand, while having more electrified models helps the company remain competitive in an evolving market, the numbers will rise steadily over the next few years rather than be an instant smash hit.

“Next year is about awareness of a whole new product portfolio, new powertrains and so on. And then the midterm, I think, is where we're talking about seeing a higher sales volume,” a spokesperson told Drive.

“I think it's important for our market that we have levers to pull. And, for us, that's mild-hybrid, PHEV and EV. It somewhat nullifies the discussion about whether you prefer petrol or EV, because the Elroq sits pretty much beside Karoq in that space, and the Enyaq does the same next to the Kodiaq.

“If people aren't ready to go electric, they can opt for a PHEV. I think those things will set Skoda up for success.”

Alongside Volkswagen, Skoda has faced delays in introducing cleaner energy cars to Australia. For example, despite launching in 2020, the electric Enyaq Coupe didn’t arrive locally until late 2024.

After the recent arrival of the Elroq and Enyaq SUV electric models this year, the Epiq city SUV is the next to come, confirmed for Australia in 2027.

Skoda’s Vision O and Vision 7S concept cars are also possible additions at a later stage.

Skoda’s current internal combustion-engined (ICE) line-up, in order of size, includes the Fabia hatch, Scala hatch, Octavia and Superb wagons and sedans, Kamiq small SUV and Kodiaq large SUV.

However, looming Euro 7 emissions regulations could see the end of the Scala, and possibly the Fabia and Kamiq, before the end of the decade.
