The Ford Mustang two-door sports car has reported its strongest monthly sales in Australia in almost seven years, as deliveries of the new model launched late last year ramp up.

And it is convincingly outperforming the slow-selling electric car that shares its name – the Mustang Mach-E SUV – which last month reported just 42 deliveries, compared to 720 two-doors.

Last month's tally is the Mustang's best result since 780 reached customers in November 2018, although it is down on its record of 1351 sales in May 2017.

Since January 1, Ford has handed over 2489 two-door Mustangs – more than it did in all of 2024 (1464), 2023 (1475) and 2022 (1887), although not 2021 (2827).

The Mustang's monthly average of 498 deliveries places it on track – at a projected 5974 cars by year's end – for its highest annual sales result since a tally of 6412 was reported in 2018.

It's despite costing much more now than it did then, at $86,990 plus on-road costs for the volume-selling GT Fastback V8 automatic, against $65,990 for its mid-2018 equivalent.

The V8 has historically accounted for as much as 90 per cent of Mustang sales, the remainder the 2.3-litre turbo four-cylinder that's now available in automatic coupe form only.

The Ford Mustang was Australia's top-selling sports car from 2016 – its first full year in local showrooms – to 2022, clocking up more than 33,000 deliveries over that time, including a record 9165 in 2017.

A large gap between old and new models – not helped by delays, the latest 'S650' model arriving a year later than first planned – saw the Ford's crown handed to the Subaru BRZ in 2023, and BMW 2 Series Coupe in 2024.

The latter represented BMW's first time leading the sports-car category in 13 years.

To see the Mustang miss out on retaking the title in 2025, Ford would need to halt deliveries, and BMW more than triple 2 Series Coupe sales for the rest of the year – an effectively impossible feat.

In contrast, Ford has sold 223 Mustang Mach-E electric SUVs so far this year – an otherwise unrelated vehicle that controversially wears the iconic badge – compared to nearly 10,000 Tesla Model Ys.

It is despite offering drive-away deals that cut $7000 off the price of the base model, which is now $63,000 on the road.
