The Porsche 911 GT2 RS is returning for the first time since the current 992-generation 911 appeared almost seven years ago.

The model is tipped to adopt a performance-focused hybrid system similar to the new 911 GTS T-Hybrid, and is expected to debut by the middle of next year, ahead of a global launch in 2027.

Likely to become the most powerful Porsche 911 ever built, the latest GT2 RS should feature the 3.8-litre twin-turbo horizontally-opposed "flat" six-cylinder engine from the old '991' model, but with the addition of 400-volt hybrid technology.

As Drive reported in March 2023, the new-generation 911 GT2 RS will use petrol-electric hybrid technology developed for its Le Mans-winning race cars, with an electric motor aiding its six-cylinder engine.

While exact details on the GT2 RS's hybrid setup remain unclear, the 911 GTS T-Hybrid uses a gearbox-mounted electric motor and a "lightweight" 1.9kWh lithium-ion high-voltage battery, along with a lighter 12-volt starter battery using lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry.

Porsche insiders said the brand is targeting "more than 520kW" and a "significant increase in torque" compared to the 515kW and 750Nm outputs of the 2017 to 2019 model, while a recent report from Autocar claims it could be as high as 559kW.

To account for the added weight of the electric motor and battery, Porsche will use a lightweight construction as standard, similar to the Weissach Package of the old GT2 RS and the current 911 GT3 RS with carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic for the bonnet, roof and mirror housings.

It will also use polycarbonate windows and magnesium wheels, while carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic anti-roll bars and drop links from the previous model will likely return.

Porsche is said to be targeting a 0-100km/h acceleration time of less than the claimed 2.8 seconds of the previous 911 GT2 RS, while it is aiming to preserve the old model's 39:61 front-to-rear weight balance.

The previous, '991'-generation 911 GT2 RS debuted in 2017 and was last offered in Australia in 2019 for $644,600 before on-road costs.

More details on the 2027 Porsche 911 GT2 RS will be confirmed closer to its expected debut in the middle of next year.
