Chery's new plug-in hybrid system boasts a near-100km all-electric driving range, which is boosted to 1200km combined range with the petrol engine in play.

Chery Australia has revamped its Tiggo 8 Pro Max large SUV line-up, turning it into the Tiggo 8 and swapping the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine for a plug-in hybrid powertrain dubbed ‘Chery Super Hybrid (CSH)’.
Cutting the line-up from three variants to two, the range now kicks off at $45,990 drive-away for the 2026 Chery Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid Urban – increasing the point of entry by $4000.
Topping out with the Ultimate grade, priced at $49,990, the flagship Chery large SUV is now $2000 pricier than last year’ equivalent model.
However, going some way to justifying the increase in price is a more advanced powertrain that combines a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with a single electric motor.
The former produces 105kW/215Nm, while the latter makes 150kW/310Nm, but Chery Australia is yet to reveal the combined figures.
For reference, the outgoing model made 180kW/375Nm from its 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.
Drive is now sent exclusively to the front wheels in all grades, whereas last year’s top-spec Tiggo 8 Pro Max Ultimate was an all-wheel-drive model, via a single-speed automatic ‘Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT)’.
Also fitted with an 18.3kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery, the Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid is rated to travel up to 95km before need a recharge – based on less-stringent NEDC testing.
And with up to 40kW fast-charging available, the Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid can recoup 30-80 per cent of its battery in a claimed 20 minutes.
Combined with the petrol engine, the total cruising distance of the Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid is a claimed 1200km.
Standard equipment in the 2026 Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid range includes 19-inch alloy wheels, synthetic leather seats, interior ambient lighting, a wireless smartphone charger, 10-speaker sound system, power-operated driver’s seat, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and seating for seven passengers.
Handling multimedia duties is a 15.6-inch touchscreen with a ‘Hello Chery’-activated voice assistant, but Chery has made no mention of in-built satellite navigation, digital radio or Apple CarPlay/Android Auto support.
In terms of safety, there is a surround-view monitor, nine airbags, autonomous emergency braking (AEB), adaptive cruise control, and lane-keep assist.
Stepping up to the Ultimate grade nets buyers heated and cooled front seats, driver’s side headrest speakers, a head-up display, panoramic sunroof, rear privacy glass, illuminated front scuff plates, and a massaging driver’s seat.
The 2026 Chery Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid goes on sale from July, and will compete against other hybrid large SUV seven-seaters such as the Toyota Kluger, Kia Sorento, and Hyundai Santa Fe.
