The popular BYD Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid has gained a new, top-of-the-range variant with more power and a larger battery pack for increased electric-only range.

BYD has added a new flagship variant to its popular plug-in hybrid SUV line-up – the 2026 BYD Sealion 6 Premium Extended Range – priced no higher than the next model down.
The new Sealion 6 variant pairs the Premium Standard Range's high equipment level, turbocharged engine, and all-wheel drive layout with the 26.6kWh Extended Range battery.
It makes for the quickest grade in BYD's plug-in hybrid SUV line-up – claimed to be capable of zero to 100km/h in 5.5 seconds, from 253kW – rated with a 128km electric-only driving range.
Prices start from $52,990 plus on-road costs, identical to the Premium Standard Range below it, despite a larger battery pack.
There are now five models in the Sealion 6 range, starting at $42,990 plus on-road costs with a standard-range battery and lower level of equipment in the base-model Essential trim.
The Premium Extended Range is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine developing 96kW and 220Nm, matched with 150kW/300Nm front and 120kW/250Nm rear electric motors.
A combined output of 253kW – up from 238kW in the Standard Range, despite the same motor and engine outputs – for a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.5 seconds, down from 5.9sec, via all-wheel drive.
The 26.6kWh battery pack is rated to deliver a claimed 128km of electric-only driving range in NEDC lab testing – less stringent than the more common WLTP test – compared to 140km for the front-drive Dynamic Extended Range.
The Premium Standard Range quotes 81km NEDC, though it is based on depleting the battery from 100 per cent to its lower limit of 25 per cent, compared to between 100 and 20 per cent for the Extended Range.
The new variant claims fuel use of 1.1 litres per 100 kilometres between 100 and 20 per cent battery charge, or 5.5L/100km at or below 20 per cent charge.
It compares to 1.4L/100km from 100 to 25 per cent, and 5.8L/100km below 25 per cent, for the Premium Standard Range, all under NEDC protocols.
BYD's new Sealion 6 flagship is otherwise unchanged from the shorter-range Premium grade below it.
Standard equipment includes leather-look upholstery, power-adjustable heated and ventilated front seats, a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a head-up display, a panoramic sunroof, and a 10-speaker Infinity sound system.
The option of Michelin tyres no longer appears on the latest spec sheet published on the BYD Australia website today, to coincide with the opening of 2026 BYD Sealion 6 Premium Extended Range orders.
