The 2025 Toyota Yaris city hatch and Yaris Cross SUV have been updated with new safety features across the range, in exchange for price rises of up to $890.

And Toyota has introduced a new type of air conditioning gas after Drive exclusively revealed last year that it – along with many other top car brands – was using one 1400 times worse for the environment than CO2.

The new gas is known as R1234yf, replacing R134a, and is now standard in all Yaris and Yaris Cross models – the second and third Toyota models to offer it, after the Kluger seven-seater.

The largest price rise for 2025 has been applied to the entry-level Yaris Cross GX, which gains blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a door exit warning to match the rest of the range.

The GX also gains heated door mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, and parking support brake – a low-speed auto braking system to prevent collisions in car parks.

All variants of the Yaris and Yaris Cross are now fitted with a low-speed pedestrian warning system, which produces a sound at low speed when the vehicle may be driving on electric power to alert other road users of its presence.

New in the Yaris hatch range are front and rear parking sensors, and parking support brake for the base Ascent Sport – both previously offered on other models only – while the SX gains the ZR's 16-inch alloy wheels, up from 15s.

There are no mechanical changes to either vehicle, with the Yaris and front-wheel-drive Yaris Cross combining a 67kW/120Nm 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with a 59kW/141Nm electric motor to produce 85kW combined.

All-wheel-drive Yaris Cross models add a 3.9kW/52Nm electric motor to the rear axle.

Standard features in both vehicles are also otherwise unchanged, with an 8.0-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, halogen headlights, cloth seats, and adaptive cruise control in the base models of each.

The 2025 Toyota Yaris and Yaris Cross are available to order now.
