MG's first Toyota Kluger or Kia Sorento competitor is a turbo-petrol SUV considerably cheaper than established rivals, but it is not the most affordable seven-seater on the market.
The first seven-seat MG SUV sold in Australia – the 2025 MG QS – will cost $9000 more than an equivalent version of the smaller HS when it arrives in showrooms soon.
The QS undercuts a similarly-sized Toyota Kluger Hybrid by more than $20,000, an entry-level Hyundai Santa Fe by more than $10,000, and a base-model, petrol V6 Kia Sorento by about $7500.
However, it starts $3000 more expensive than a top-of-the-range Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max Ultimate, and doesn't vie for the title of the country's most affordable seven-seat SUV, which is currently the Tiggo 8 Pro Max Urban at $38,990 drive-away.
It is all thanks to "introductory pricing", which is valid for a limited time before the QS reverts to another drive-away deal – or its RRPs before on-road costs of $49,990 for the base Excite, or $55,990 for the high-grade Essence.
The QS is a rebranded version of the Roewe RX9 sold by MG's parent company in other markets, and is larger than a Santa Fe or Kluger, but slightly smaller than a Hyundai Palisade.
Two variants of the MG QS are available – the front-wheel-drive Excite and all-wheel-drive Essence.
Both are powered by a 153kW/360Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, matched with a nine-speed automatic transmission.
Claimed fuel consumption sits at 8.4 litres per 100 kilometres with front-wheel drive, and 8.8L/100km with all-wheel drive. All models can tow up to 2000kg braked.
A plug-in hybrid is expected to follow at a later date, with specifications and prices yet to be confirmed.
Measuring 4983mm long, 1967mm wide and 1778mm tall, the QS offers seven seats as standard across a 2-3-2 configuration across the first, second and third rows.
Standard features across the model range include dual 12.3-inch screens with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, power-adjustable front seats, a power tailgate, three-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, and a suite of safety systems.
The second-row seats slide and recline, while the third row reclines, with all rear passengers given access to cupholders, air vents, and USB ports (two up front, two second row, one third row).
Boot space is quoted as 203 litres behind the third row of seats, 517L behind the second row, and 1052L behind the first row – smaller than the spaces claimed by many rivals, but it is unclear how MG measured these figures.
The Essence grade adds larger 21-inch alloys, adaptive suspension, leather trim, heated and ventilated front seats, a wireless phone charger, 12-speaker Bose stereo, front parking sensors, auto high beams, and more.
The 2025 MG QS is available to order now, ahead of first deliveries commencing in the coming months.
