Diesel returns to BMW's new fourth-generation X3 line-up with more torque than the flagship M50 xDrive, but also more expensive than the 30e xDrive plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV).
BMW Australia will once again offer diesel power in its new-generation X3 family SUV range, with the new 40d xDrive variant slotting in below the flagship M50 xDrive.
Priced at $108,900 before on-road costs, the sole diesel powertrain in the new BMW X3 range is powered by a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel six-cylinder engine producing 210kW/670Nm.
With power sent to all four wheels, the 40d xDrive can accelerate from 0-100km/h in a claimed 5.4 seconds.
This positions the diesel X3 above the 140kW/310Nm 20 xDrive (from $86,100) and 220kW/670Nm 30e xDrive plug-in hybrid ($104,100), but below the performance-honed 293kW/580Nm M50 xDrive ($128,900).
Paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, the new 40d xDrive produces 15kW/50Nm more than its predecessor, and BMW is also promising “significant advances over the outgoing BMW X3 xDrive30d” but has not disclosed fuel consumption figures.
For reference, that outgoing model was rated at 6.4L/100km.
In terms of equipment, the 40d xDrive is fitted with the M Sport Package as standard and matches the 30e xDrive in specification barring the one-inch-larger 20-inch alloy wheels.
