Audi is expanding the model range of its new BMW 3 Series competitor with a more powerful petrol model – and a plug-in hybrid at the same price, just under the Luxury Car Tax threshold.

The 2025 Audi A5 line-up has expanded from one to five model grades with the addition of two high-power, petrol-only variants – and two plug-in hybrids at the same price.

The petrol-only A5 TFSI 200kW quattro, and plug-in hybrid A5 e-hybrid 270kW quattro are on sale now, ahead of Audi showroom arrivals due in the fourth quarter of this year (October to December).

Sedan versions are priced from $89,900 plus on-road costs, with the wagons $92,900 plus on-road costs – irrespective of whether petrol-only or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) power is selected.

It is despite a longer list of equipment in the PHEV than the turbo-petrol, including larger wheels, sports suspension and a black styling pack.

The new variants introduce all-wheel-drive, as well as the Avant wagon body style, to the new A5 range – both previously limited to the top-of-the-range S5 performance grade.

They join the front-wheel-drive, $79,900 A5 Sedan TFSI 150kW variant in showrooms now, the first 'regular' member of the new A5 line-up that replaces the outgoing A4 and A5 model lines.

The plug-in hybrid sedan slots in under the Luxury Car Tax threshold for 'fuel-efficient' vehicles of $91,387.

However, it has arrived too late to take advantage of a Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemption on PHEVs priced below this marker and purchased through a novated lease.

Powering the petrol-only models is a 200kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, matched with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Audi claims the pair can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds, in line with the variant's nearest rivals, the rear-wheel-drive BMW 330i and Mercedes-Benz C300 sedans.

The e-hybrid models introduce plug-in hybrid power to the A5 in Australia, a type of powertrain only offered by Mercedes-Benz among Audi's key rivals, after BMW dropped the 330e last year.

Plug-in hybrid A5s combine a 185kW 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with a 105kW electric motor and 20.7kWh battery pack, for combined outputs of 270kW and 500Nm, and all-wheel drive.

Audi quotes a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.1 seconds, and up to 87km of claimed electric driving range for Australian models, which ride on larger wheels than European versions.

AC home charging at up to 11kW is supported, for an empty-to-full recharge of the battery in a claimed 2.5 hours.

In Europe, fuel consumption is rated at 2.1 to 2.7 litres per 100 kilometres with a charged battery, or 6.5 to 7.4L/100km with an empty pack, according to lab testing and depending on equipment level.

The 200kW variants build on the base 150kW variant's equipment list with unique 19-inch wheels, the S Line interior pack, and on the wagon, roof rails.

Plug-in hybrids add 20-inch alloys, red brake calipers, sports suspension, a black exterior styling pack, privacy glass, and an 'auxiliary air conditioning system'.

The 200kW petrol-only and 270kW plug-in hybrid versions of the 2025 Audi A5 are available to order now.
