What is an international driving permit and when do you need one?

It's easier than ever to rent a car overseas, thanks to more apps, businesses, and options.

But before you pack your bags, there are a few things you'll need to know to jump in a car overseas and do some touring.

This is everything you need to know about international driving permits.

What is an international driving permit?

In its simplest form, an international driving permit is a document that translates your licence into nine of the most common languages.

It is a United Nations-recognised document the size of a passport that is valid in over 150 countries worldwide.

Not only is it a permit that translates your licence, but it proves that your document is legitimate and still valid at the time the permit is issued.

How do I get an international driver's permit?

You do not need to take a driving test to get an international driver's permit. However, you will need to order one online or visit an authorised distributor.

To apply online, head to the Australian Automotive Association website. You'll need a recent passport-style photo of yourself, a clear and readable scan of the front and back of your physical licence, and the application form.

You'll need at least a week before you leave for your trip for it to come in the mail, but you can apply for one in person and receive it on the day.

The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) is the only authorised distributor in Australia, but the state and territory motoring clubs can process them on behalf of the AAA.

  • New South Wales – NRMA
  • Australian Capital Territory – NRMA
  • Victoria – RACV
  • Queensland – RACQ
  • South Australia – RAA
  • Western Australia – RAC WA
  • Northern Territory – AANT
  • Tasmania – RACT

If you show up to your local branch with your physical licence, some branches will even take a photo of you and print it for you on the licence. You should be able to walk out with your document within half an hour.

The process costs $51 plus postage if you have done it online.

When do you need an international driver's licence?

If you plan on driving in any overseas country where you do not hold a current licence, you will need an international driver's licence.

Most countries only recognise the permit if you plan on staying three months or less – as a tourist and not a temporary/permanent resident.

You will need to bring your passport, physical licence, and international driver's permit with you while driving, too, as it is not a driver's licence by itself.

Digital licences are also not accepted overseas as a form of licence or identification.

In what countries do you not need an international driver's permit?

While you don't need an international driver's permit in some countries, it's recommended that you get one anyway, as some insurance and rental companies will not accept your licence alone.

New Zealand is the only country that has fully approved accepting just your Australian driver's licence.

However, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Pacific Islands, and some European countries may not require an international driver's permit, but it is highly recommended that you purchase one before leaving to ensure that you do not get turned away from a rental vehicle.

And yes, that includes needing one for those Mario Kart cars you can drive on the roads in Tokyo, Japan, and tourist mopeds in Bali.
